Panasonic Dect 6.0 Dark Grey Additional Handset Review

I've had a long series of cordless phones over the last couple of years with the last two being a DECT unit from Uniden and the previous a DECT unit from VTECH.Neither of those has gotten close to the range and reliability that I'm finding with the Panasonic handset.The Uniden set I most recently had would suddenly say "Out of Range" during a call when I was less than 30 feet from the base!I have gotten two houses down in my neighborhood with the Panasonic handset with minimal dropouts and good quality.

The features I like best are:
1) Ability to download address book from base
2) When a review missed calls on any handset, all the handsets (and base) clear the missed call
3) Ability to review messages on answering machine from any handset

I haven't found any cons yet, but if/when I do, I'll come back and revise the review.

I've always liked the Panasonic cordless phones and I decided I wanted to replace an old answering machine and an old 2.4Ghz phone with something new, so I got this set.Now it can be a bit confusing when trying to figure out which set to get, I had it down to 4 different Panasonic DECT units.Having looked at them in person, I went with this one in part because I like the look, but also it had the smallest base unit, and I wanted to take up as little space as possible on my desk.

The sound quality on the set is good, the new screens are easy to read, and even nicer compared to my parents 5.8Ghz Panasonic, the latest Pannys use conventional rechargeable AA/AAA (I forget which offhand) batteries, rather than proprietary batteries, so these will be easier to replace someday.Plus the handset is a lot lighter compared to the older 5.8Ghz handset.

Anyway, I'm very happy with it, great unit for the price.

I think Panasonic finally got it right with this one, and I only have one (very small) issue with the phone.All in all, this is without a doubt the best cordless phone system I have ever used.

I had a previous Panasonic 5.8 gHz phone and loved it.One day after about 2 years of use, the base abruptly died, and none of the handsets would connect.I think it's a sign of a strong manufacturer, though, that when one product dies the only brand that I would even consider again is the same one.

With the previous model, I had only a couple of small complaints: 1) when you received a call on one handset, it would still show "missed call" on all of the other handsets, and 2) you had to clear the missed call list individually on all handsets.Both issues have been corrected with this phone.All handsets now synchronize automatically when you review the call list, and only calls that you truly don't answer show as missed calls. And there's no more having to copy the phone book from one receiver to another, either. Changes on one phone are mirrored on all of the others.

The large display on this phone really sets it apart from others as well. When you program the time on the phone, the display acts as a second clock.And it's readable from aross the room!

Speaking of readable, the large display also makes it very easy to see who's calling.The phone does offer the talking caller ID feature found on other Panasonic phones, but we find it to be annoying.Thankfully, you can turn the feature off in the menu system.

And that leads me to my only complaint about this phone, albeit an extremely minor one.When you get into various menus, I haven't found a way to go back one screen.For example, if I click into the caller list and then click on the individual entry, I can't figure out how to go back to the caller list.I have to go all the way out to the main phone screen and then go back into the caller list.If there was just a simple "back" button, this phone would be perfect in every way.

Of course the purpose of a phone is to allow you to communicate clearly, and this one excels in that department.Connections are clear, and it is very easy to hear the other end.The previous phone had a "voice enhancer" technology that I found to be unnatural and annoying, and that (thankfully) is not present here.But it's not missed.

I've had the phone down the street about 7 or 8 houses away, and the connection is still rock solid.We live in a typical suburban setting, and I've heard no interference or static at any time.

Also, the DECT 6 technology, operating on a lower frequency, does not interfere with our wireless computer network at all. And I've never heard any static from the microwave or any other electronic device, for that matter.

The real selling feature of this phone to me was the visual voicemail list.Since the base doesn't have any kind of indicator as to how many messages are stored, the handset serves as an excellent way to navigate the messages. And you can listen to messages in any order, and you can save or delete them one by one as well.The fact that the messages are tagged with the caller ID info is great, too!

Oh, one other feature that I haven't seen mentioned is that the keypad is lit.That makes for calling in a dark room to be painless.

All in all, this one is very deserving of the 5-star rating.

Likes: the large, well lit display; the message list (choicemail); automatic syncing of all handsets.

Dislikes: The lack of a "back" button in the menu screens.

[EDIT: Someone pointed out that you can indeed go back one screen in the menus.You just have to push the little joystick controller any direction, and the phone will return to the previous screen.Now the phone is perfect! Thanks for the tip!!]

I agree with the previous reviewer that this is a great product.I bought it to avoid interference with my home wi-fi network (g and n); absolutely no interference.

I really like the backlit keypad and the talking caller ID (a noticeable improvement over previous Panasonic phones). I notice that these were the biggest gripes on previous Amazon reviews, so Panasonic is obviously taking notice.

If you want to save about $20, you can buy the version without a phone keypad in the base unit (KX-TG9334T) but I like having the "extra phone" in the base unit (you have to use the speaker phone option with no headset plugged in).Works great at a workdesk or kitchen and almost makes this a 5 headset system.

Unlike the previous reviewer, who thought the headsets too small, for me they are slightly bigger than I like.I would prefer something slightly smaller that could fit inside a pants pocket while I'm working in the yard or in the garage.Not possible with these headsets--you need a belt clip--but not really a big deal.

The phone book is great--easy to add an incoming call--and MOST IMPORTANT it automatically updates the phone book in EVERY headset with that new name and number.

We plan to add another headset but there are three different options.A little disappointing that the Panasonic parts center could not tell us the differences (we eventually found out via the internet--the TGA 630 has no lit touchpad and is white/pearl color, the TGA 930 is pretty close to the supplied headset but the keypad is black, and the TGA 935 has drop and splash resistance (for a kitchen or bath?).

Bottom line: great product!

I have had no problems with this phone.The sound quality is fine.I have the base on the second floor and I can use the phone in the yard or in the basement.You should note that the construction of the phone may lead to some problems depending on the dexterity of the user.To use the menu, you often have to push the main button, which is more like a joystick.If it is not pushed correctly, you may make an unintended selection.If the phone is used by those, who are not particularly steady (e.g. those with tremors), you may want to consider another model.Features that I like include flashing when there is a voice mail message, lighting up when it rings (particularly at night), and the number missed calls are indicated on the main screen.It has an answering machine but if you use voice mail, it may not be useful.

Nice phone, good sound, uses AAA batteries
I don't think as user friendly as the unidens. The menus are less intuitive for me at least.Accessing messages and remote use of the answering machine was much more straight forward with the uniden. No lcd on the answering machine. I especially liked the uniden 1580 series but since it didn't have headphone or belt clip capability it didn't work out.
The panasonic 6442 has both of those but lacks speed dials, almost a deal breaker, not sure just yet. The rep told me none of the current models have speed dial. Why eliminate speed dial?
The dect frequencymay be a step forward as far as security and interference are concerned but in my opinion the features and quality are a step back from the last generation phones.
As expensive as this phone is I expected great and got just okay. Still looking for the perfect phone...

I bought this phone for one reason and one reason only: call blocking.I was excited when I found Panasonic offered a phone with this feature as our previous Panasonic phone worked quite well (but no call blocking feature).This phone absolutely has call blocking.What Panasonic doesn't tell you upfront is that the phone will ring once before being blocked.That significant detail is buried in the specifics of the manual.Not so bad you might think?Not so.The blocking feature sends a busy signal back to the automated dialing system.The automated dialing system doing the calling instantly thinks "Ah-hah, someone home".It promptly schedules another call in 5 minutes.And so on every 5 minutes for about 40 minutes before finally giving up! I can't believe Panasonic is unaware of this.And if, as my wife noted, the phone needs time to process the caller ID information, I'd far rather it blocked the first ring of every call vs. this.

I have had this system for 2 days and I am so pleased with it.

I bought this system to block collection calls aimed at the
previous owner of our recycled verizon phone number.We have
been baraged with these collection calls with no way other than
changing our phone number to stop them.(I found out that the national
do not call registry doesn't apply to bill collectors!) My wife
didn't want to change our phone number due to the hassle of notifying
everyone and no assurance that the new phone number wouldn't also
have the same problem.I have been looking for a way to block
specific phone numbers on our land line verizon phone, and this
is the ONLY way I have found to do that.

This system allows entry of up to 30 phone numbers to block. The
numbers can be keyed in after entering a code on any of the
4 handsets.The number is then blocked on all the handsets and the
answering machine.Or if I get a call from a number I wish to block
I can navigate to the option to block that number with a few key
strokes.(Naturally you need to have caller id service on your phone
for this feature to recognize the incoming phone numer).

To test the call blocking I blocked my cell phone, and when I called
my main number. I got a single ring, a fast busy for a few seconds and
then a disconnect.On the Panasonic phone I just heard a single ring
and then blessed silence.A few times a day we hear the one ring and
know a call is being blocked.We no longer check the caller id list
to know who called and got blocked - it doesn't matter.No answering
the phone or removing crummy collection messages from the answering
machine. It works !!!

In addition to call blocking, other features I really like is the large print
bright black on white lcd display on the handsets, the ability to mute the ring
on selected handsets (like the one in the bedroom).The ability to mute
the ring on the answering machine (also in the bedroom). The ability to use
any of the 4 handsets to check messages, and to record the answering machine
greeting.The ability to answer a call on more than one handset at the same
time (no more hokey transfering of calls from one handset to another).

This system is heads and shoulders above our last system.The Panasonic
Dect 6 technology is a new generation of features.I know I sound like
a commercial, but I am that pleased.If you check my other reviews and you will
see I tell it like I see it, good or bad.

I forgot to mention another good feature, the answering machine turns off
if I pick up the phone while someone is rcording a message... no more trying
to get the answering machine turned off to avoid feedback, while trying to
take the call.

Regarding the text to speech feature which announces the caller's name
from their caller ID, we don't use it.It is primitive and difficult to
understand but if you needed it you could get used to the voice chip
translation of your caller's name.The reason I don't use it is because
I wanted less disturbance from calls and I found the mangled caller
ID announcement a bit jarring.

In regard to call blocking, it has drastically reduced the annoyance of
the harassing calls we were receiving. The blocked numbers have mostly
stopped calling, and when one company called with a different number,
it only took a few seconds to add that number to the blocked list.

When I bought this set, it replaced a clunky Motorola cordless 2.4 GHz set that too often got interference or fade out. I liked the look, feel, and sound clarity of this set.

But my wife started complaining of strange dropped calls. She would be in the middle of the call, and if she tried to put the caller on the speaker phone option, or if she got another call and wanted to "flash" the call, the phone would stop transmitting. The info-screen says "phone not registered to base." Pick up one of the extensions and there's your caller, blithely talking away--nothing has happened on their end.

I ignored her complaints--it never happened to me. Then I saw it happen to her and it started happening to me, too.

With three phones and only two of us in the house, you wouldn't think it would be hard to "register" the phones to their locations. So I did it, and took the step of putting a nail-polished 1, 2, and 3 on phones & bases.

Nice try, but no cigar. The drops still happen. And recently, talking to a friend in Chicago, the phone sounded dead on my side. I was about to hang up when my friend came back on the line. He said, "sorry, I just got these new Panasonic 6.0 phones and I keep getting a "phone not registered to base" error that acts like it drops the call.

Yeah, I know.

Oh, they have a ton of great features, especially that you can program the extensions not to ring at night, and the call clarity is excellent. But when they make the phones too much smarter than the users, they've lost me.

I'm headed to the store (or through Amazon) to pick out some new cordless phones. And no, they won't be Panasonic.

If you have ever owned a cordless phone before, and the battery dies, so you open the back of the phone only to find a "battery pack". You look every where and no one carries "that" battery pack. Well..., finally Panasonic got smart and did something about that. This phone comes with plain old Nickel-Metal Hydride Rechargeable AAA Batteries! No more battery pack! In a few years when the original batteries no linger hold a charge I'll just replace them with easy to find NiMH AAA batteries.

It's kinda hard to find a "simple" cordless phone these days -- either the manufacturers want to sell you 2, 3, or 4 at once, or they want to include a bunch of extra features (answering machines, multi-line capabilities, etc.) that you don't need.

The Panasonic here is different: It really is a "basic" phone, and the execution is superb.Voice quality is excellent, and while I might have done the user-interface slightly differently, it is at the level that anyone can pick up the phone and figure out how to, e.g., add or use address book memories without having to look at the instructions.(The full dot-matrix LCD -- in a pleasing blue on gray color -- helps here.)

Most of the time I use this while in front of a computer, so I use the (very inexpensive) Panasonic headset that Amazon sells (it's just a standard 2.5mm plug, so it'll work with most standard cell phones or cordless phones) to keep both hands free.Works great...

You can purchase additional "extension" units for this phone if you do want more than one, although in those cases it probably makes more sense (e.g., would save money) to buy one of the "multi-packs" initially.

Panasonic DECT 6.0 2-Line Black Corded Cordless Telephone Review

This phone is a decent choice for a 2-line cordless phone.The corded base station is a nice plus and sound quality is excellent.Range is pretty good too.

However, for me, the negatives of this phone were a deal-beaker.The phonebook has no speed dial numbers and it takes multiple keystrokes to get into the menu to look up numbers to dial.Likewise, accessing the caller ID log takes multiple keystrokes to see the log.Both should be single key access from the idle mode.

The voicemail indicator is via text on the screen, not the light on the top of the phone so I often missed seeing waiting messages.It also seemed the VM detect was flakey as I often had messages and the phone did not display them.

The ringer sounds and volumes are poor.I use this in a office environment and the softest ringer is quite loud and there is only one normal electronic ring sound (bad design for a 2-line phone!)

Finally the biggest problem of all - the cordless handsets will randomly go "dead".After speaking about this with Panasonic they told me there may be a problem with iPhones interfering with the handsets and making them go dead.They said there were other reports on the internet of this being a problem but had not concluded their study.Since I'm an iPhone user, I guess I won't be a Panasonic phone user.

We purchased and received this cordless phone/answering system a week ago.So far, it has provided flawless operation.It was very easy to set up.Everything works as it should, with enough range on the handsets for our three story home with no noise or interference.The caller ID voice announcements are fun, although the name pronunciation on some callers is funny to hear (that feature can be turned off if it annoys you).We have not had any unexpected volume change problems as reported on some Panasonic cordless models.All in all, we are very pleased with this device.

This review covers the KX-TGA641 handset used by the KX-TG6431, KX-TG6432, KX-TG6433, KX-TG6434, KX-TG6441, KX-TG6442, KX-TG6443, KX-TG6444 and KX-TG6445 cordless phone sets. The KX-TG644x "keypad/speaker phone" base is not discussed here.

DECT Security Breach: as of this June 6, 2009 writing, it remains unclear how secure is the Panasonic KX-TG64xx series - specifically the KX-TGA641 handset. Poorly designed DECT hardware is at risk of being eavesdropped . An updated DECT standard uses CAT-iq which may enhance security. On May 8, I emailed Panasonic support asking if this product set is subject to the "DECT hack" discussed throughout Internet forums and if CAT-iq is implemented. On the 18th I sent another and this time I received a case number: 26512122. On June 1st I inquired as to when I might expect an answer. The silence is deafening. (June 9 UPDATE: this is their reply... "The KX-TG6433 is using Panasonic unique DECT protocol for the communication between the base unit and the handset. This unit has higher protection against eavesdropping than standard DECT even without CAT-iq protocol.") And this is Panasonic's "Security Code Statement" on the FCC Web site: "This cordless telephone system has more than 1,000 billion combinations that are provided by the following means: Provided with 128 bits for security codes. When shipped from the factory, the security code is decided by the manufacture. It is memorized in a memory IC. Base and Handset knows each other's security code information." The "DECT hack" requires a modified VOIP card and a laptop running Linux and in some cases the use of a back-end PBX server - most of which is beyond the means and reach of your usual wannabe snoop. I conclude this phone is quite secure enough for average personal and business use. Regardless of the make, model and technology of the cordless phone(s) you own, privacy critical conversations should be done on a hard wired set.

The Review: To begin, the manual is awful. Useful feature information is buried in verbose paragraphs instead of outlined bullet points. A highlighter pen is required! The most egregious instructions are for Programmable Settings which are done via either of two methods, the nice scrolling menus or "Direct Commands." The latter is keyed in at the main menu as a pound followed by three digits, such as #302 to record a greeting. Quoting page 20: "Direct command is the main method used in these operating instructions." So, twenty seven pages of instructions for direct commands and two pages for the menus. Now, where are the scrolling menus? On the handset. In your hand. All the time. From now on. Where is the manual with the three page chart of direct commands? Hmmmm. I cannot fathom this idiotic bass-ackwards scheme. On the bright side, once you've scrolled through the 35 or so menu screens enough times, you'll be more than well versed in their usage. Note: the "Initial Settings" menu contains sub-menus for much more than settings that are, well, initial.

One of the big selling points for me is the use of regular old AAA NiMH batteries. My triple handset KX-TG6433 replaces three stand-alone sets that used different, proprietary and expensive battery "packs." No more! However, one caveat... discussed further on.

The LCD screen is informative, big and bright with large, easy to read fonts. The keypad is quite nicely illuminated although lighting of the three soft keys is absent. You can choose any color back light for the screen as long as it's blue.

The handset ear piece audio is crisp and clean, free of digital artifacts while listeners on the other end can hear me well. The speaker audio for the handsets and base is dinky but usable in a quiet environment. For extended hands-free conversations I use the KX-TCA60 headset. (Update:that broke after about a dozen uses.I now use a Plantronics.)This is also one of the few phones I've ever used that I can cram between my neck and ear without jamming any buttons.

The KX-TG64xx series is loaded with all the usual bells and whistles and lacks for nothing in my experience. Most everything I became used to in all the phones I've had over the ages is here, and then some, all fully integrated. (If I had to quibble, I would want a flashing LED on the base to indicate the presence of messages listened to but not deleted.) All the fancy schmancy services you pay extra for at the phone company are recognized and operate well. Answering System messages can be accessed and manipulated from any handset and from outside phones using a three digit remote access code. Most settings migrate across all handsets meaning that if you change/add/delete something on one, it's done on all. Others, like rings tones and volume, affect only the individual ones. Now that I'm past the "return for exchange" period, I decided to buy a fourth handset.

Finally, this phone talks. My favorite is Talking Caller ID. When the phone rings, I don't even have to raise my head from my recliner pillow to look at it. Now that's living! On the down side, the KX-TGA641 handset strongly resembles my Logitech Harmony 550 universal remote. I often find myself shouting "Hello" into the remote. Or trying to change channels with the phone. When did life get sooooo complicated??

From the "Why on Earth did they do that?" department: the charger does not recognize fully charged batteries. When I first unboxed my KX-TG6433, I took the six 650 mAh AAA batteries and ran them through my MAHA C401FS charger. This would not only save time and effect a nice conditioned charge, but the MAHA diagnostics would warn of defects. Imagine my surprise when all three handsets alerted with a flashing battery icon and a "charge for 7 hours" message. With fully charged batteries! Similarly, if at some point you remove the batteries in a handset to read the label in there (serial number, FCC ID number, etc.) or for whatever reason, you are greeted by the same scenario. And even though fully charged, the batteries will be COOKED for several hours to the degree the handset becomes... too hot to hold! So, here's a hot tip (heh heh) - don't pre-charge the AAAs and don't remove them unless they need to be replaced.

That and the manual aside, this is a good looking, feature rich, convenient and affordable cordless phone system. Now that I'm beyond the menu system learning curve, I'm expecting years of comfortable and easy use.

We have been using this cordless phone for about a month now and have had no problems with it.Display is clear and lights up, sound quality is fine, and the programming is straightforward.I downgraded my phone service to save some $, so this answering machine replaces the voicemail feature I eliminated (plus we needed a phone that shows caller ID anyway).Caller ID displays on ring #2, and the digital answering machine works well.I am VERY pleased with this purchase and its affordable price: for what I save on my phone service downgrade in one month, I have a new phone/answering machine.

If you like its features, you'll probably like this phone a lot. It's the best I've owned during the past 30 years. Considering my own relatively basic tastes and needs, I especially like the following:

* simple yet elegant design
* large display, with large text and good lighting
* a very usable speakerphone option
* a dedicated phone book button and handy joystick design
* a phone book that auto-transfers to all handsets
* automatic sleep mode for night-time silence
* generally easy programming even for klutzes like me
* an answering machine with mindlessly simple operation
* and most important, great sound quality and reception

But I don't like these:

* the lack of a ringer on-off switch on the handset
To be fair, though, few phones have such a button these days.

* the fact that I had to return my first unit
The first unit I received had a lot of background static and a slightly skewed visual display, but I'm glad that I tried another. The second unit has crystal clear sound and all looks good. If you notice either of these probs, I'd suggest trying another unit.

You know, it's just a phone, but I'm thoroughly satisfied after a month's use. Great phone, fair price, and reliable Amazon service even when a problem arose. Can't beat that.

UPDATE AFTER SIX MONTHS' USE: No surprises, no regrets. I stand by my review fully. In fact, I recently bought the 4-pack model for my elderly parents, and they couldn't be happier. They especially like its simple, attractive design and its large, bright display. What most impresses them, though, is the handy speakerphone option, which they use exclusively. For anyone with reduced hearing (or tender ears or busy hands), the loud and clear speakerphone could be a primary draw.

After my last Panasonic DECT 6.0 3-phone system inexplicably stopped working, I sought a similar replacement set.I've generally found Panasonic phones to be very reliable and figured my last purchase was simply a lemon (occasionally happens to the best).I ended up purchasing the KX-TG7433.The first thing I have to say is that the phone is gorgeous.The black shiny finish is much more sleek and attractive than the previous bland beige Panasonic I owned.The display is also much larger and vivid with a high-contrast black on gray LCD with large easily readable characters.The LCD and keypad are both well illuminated when any button is pushed.The time and date are prominently displayed on the LCD in standby mode.When you have a missed call or message waiting, it is also clearly displayed on the handset LCD, as well as a flashing amber LED on top of the handset.The set comes with three handsets, a base with built-in digital answering machine, and two charging bases for the extra handsets.In addition to the time and date, the LCD also displays icons for phone book, menu, and redial above their respective buttons.The center menu joystick is nice and intuitive, but it also brings about my only gripe.On my previous Panasonic phones, the most important buttons (caller ID, voice mail, redial, and phone book) were all one touch access.On this model, you have a few one touch items (mentioned above), but most features have to be accessed through the menu. Phone book items entered on one handset are automatically shared with the other handsets.

Voice quality is excellent as usual for Panasonic. Although I personally would prefer the volume to be a tad bit louder at the higher end, both the handset and speaker phone have adequate loudness and clarity for most people.There are no sudden drop outs or other sound issues like I occasionally experienced with the prior DECT 6.0 phone.The phone features talking caller ID, which is really cool.A female robotic voice will announce (or sometimes comically try her best to announce), the name of the caller (the voice cannot be changed, like on a GPS).The announcement is loud and clear and really comes in handy because you can decide whether or not to answer the phone if you are away from the handset, without disrupting whatever you're doing.The voice will also function as an alarm clock and even alert you when the battery is low.This model also has a new feature called "Choice Mail", which allows you to view caller ID info for pending messages and selectively choose and play them in any order.Sadly, this feature only works with the built in digital answer machine.If you subscribe to your telephone service provider's voice mail service, as I do, you're out of luck. Panasonic did not completely leave telecom voice mail service subscribers out of the equation.There are separate icons in the menu for the built-in answer device and subscription voice mail service.Like previous Panasonic models, the handset willautomatically dial your voice mail service access number if you select the option.If you do plan to use the built-in answer service, it offers 18 minutes of record time and the choice mail feature, so that's a major plus.However, I can't comment on the built-in voice mail quality because I don't use the feature.The phone also features a privacy mode which allows you to choose periods when all, or select, phones will alert you with visual lights instead of an audible ring, and call block mode which allows you to block unwanted numbers from ringing.Battery life is better than average.Even with all the extra bells and whistles like talking caller ID and the larger LCD, I still get basically the same battery life, (approx 2 days between charges with several hrs accumulated talk time), as my previous phone which had a smaller dimmer LCD and non-illuminated keypad.I believe I can get even more battery life, because I have yet to hear the robotic battery alarm.However, I tend to recharge when the meter reaches one bar, just to be on the safe side.This model still uses the AAA size Ni-MH batteries.

I am really happy with this phone, especially at the current price. It's an unbeatable bargain.It has features galore, good sound quality, solid build, and a gorgeous design.

This is without question, the best land line phone I have ever seen!Please look at my other reviews, you will see that I am NOT a paid reviewer to write what the manufacturer wants.

This phone does EVERYTHING!Sound is crystal clear.Both handsets and base unit have lit displays.Both have selectable ringer tones and volume.Each has independent "phone books" which can be copied from the base unit to the handsets or vice versa.Both the base unit and handsets have speaker phones.The phone books are super easy to program.

The answering system with date/day/time works terrifically!You can select pre-recorded message or make your own.The answering system capacity is 18 minutes or 64 messages.You can select between 2 and 7 rings before the answering system engages.

I like that the base unit works during power outages.

I especially like the five "speed dial" buttons to phone frequent friends or family with just one button.Great!

Call blocking works well.

Cordless handsets have great range and use rechargeable AAA batteries (included).The handset cradle recharges the batteries.

It has a "handset locator".

It supports English and Espahol.Instruction manual is well written and easy to use.

It even has an "alarm clock" feature.

I have not found a better land line phone!Strongly recommend!

I have gone through more than 15 types of cordless phones in the last several years.Some of them very good, but not perfect, others fairly awful.When I was doing my research this time for a new phone, I came across DECT 6.0 technology.It claims no interference with WiFi networks, greater range, clear transmission and extended battery life. Bottom line, it's pretty much true.

I've used this phone for a week and it is crystal clear, no interference with my WiFi network, no "hiccups" with a call, like static or audible digital artifacts.My 5.8 Ghz phone would let me talk with a range of maybe 100 feet outside of my house with the front door closed.This telephone lets me go to the end of my driveway, across the cul de sac, and into my neighbor's driveway without sound degradation.I'd guess that I'm getting about 3x the distance of my 5.8 Ghz phone in a real world situation.

The great thing about this phone is that the battery life is awesome.The phone claims up to 17 hours of talk time and several days of standby.I make a lot of conference calls from my home, and I'm on the phone about 6 hours per day.I'd have to switch cordless phones during the day with ANY 5.8Ghz phone, as they'd last anywhere from 3 to 5 hours.I've made 2 days of calls, for a total of 11 hours, and the battery indicator still shows a full charge, without being placed back into the charger.I'm going to keep it out of the charger in standby and talk until the battery runs down, to accurately gauge the battery life, but it would appear that the 17 hours of talk time is a realistic estimate.By the way, the phone uses traditional AAA rechargeable batteries (x2), for each handset.My 5.8 Ghz phone used 3, and had a max talk time of about 5 hours.

The keys on this phone are bigger than other phones, another plus in my book.I'd always misdial a number with smaller buttons.I have yet to misdial with these keys.They're the perfect size.

I don't use the answering machine, as I have telephone company voicemail.The only downside to this phone is that the message waiting indicator for telephone voicemail, doesn't work.I've set it to "on", on every phone, and my 5.8Ghz phone will flash the voicemail alert, but these handsets aren't flashing.I've had this problem with other phones, especially VTech, so I'm thinking that most phones work, there must be something about the connection into my house that doesn't get the call message alert to the phone.I have DSL and filters in the house.Maybe this is the cause?

Anyway, overall, this is a really good set of phones, they work great, have great sound, and the battery life is stellar.I'm really happy with this purchase.You should probably consider DECT 6.0 going forward.It's MUCH better than 5.8Ghz technology, in my opinion.

UPDATE:

As an update to my review, the phone is now in it's 16th hour of talk time, with 5 days of standby (no charging) and it's still working on the last bar of the battery indicator.I'd say that the 17 hours of talk time is a conservative number.As stated previously, the battery life is the best that I've ever experienced with a cordless phone.Actually, incredible by today's standards.

This new 2009 model of Panasonic's cordless DECT telephones lives up to its advertising.Sound very clear, battery life is long (my actual 1st day experience was 3-5 hr talking with 10+ in standby), and range is longer than my previous Motorola 5 GHZ model (good enough for a 2 story house plus a basement). The model includes cordless handsets, answering machine, and caller ID, as well as voice prompts of incoming caller ID calls.As a plus, the handsets use AAA Ni-MH batteries so easily purchased when they need replacing.My old Motorola used the typical specialized phone Ni-Cd batteries (with that funny connector), that lasted less than a year and a high cost to replace.

Highly recommend this model.The KX-TG 643x and 644x series are all the same except for the number of handsets that come in the package and whether the base station has its own dial capability.This model allows a max of 6 handsets (the 6445 cmes with 5 handsets-so you can purchase one more if needed KX-TGA 641T).

The caller ID list and address book is centralized, so updating updates the file on the base set.My old Motorola had an address book in each handset plus a shared in the base unit.The voice mail box default announcement is a man's voice-would prefer a woman's voice, but you can also record your own announcement

Lastly, the handsets are small(6inch by 1.5 in wide).Not a problem for me but might surprise others.Panasonic sells many DECT 6.0 cordless phones, so do your search carefully.I bought this model because the 64xx model series is new in 2009, plus it has a base station that you can also dial from giving you a 7th telephone set if needed.

Panasonic DECT 6.0-Series Dual-Handset Cordless Phone System Review

I got this phone about a week ago in order to replace a 2.4 panasonic that died -some numbers were not dialing and finally battery hookup broke off- In general I like the phone but it has some major things I don't like.
Pros: Easy to set up. You get 2 phones with 1 phone jack. Speakers are great! (unlike with my old phone people don't complain when I use them). You can hear answering machines messages from either remote set. Phonebook sharing. You can conference between phones and call each other (big hit with my kids).
Cons:
1. There is something wrong with the volume (I read complains about it in reviews in Circuit city and thought maybe person had hearing problem... but no, they were right). Let me explain: the volume goes up and down by itself for no good reason. One phone call you hear great and next one is really low so you need to adjust volume and it goes up and then down on its own again -sometimes during the same call while you are talking- .... You can live with it, you adjust volume but I don't particularly like playing with volume every other call! For me it is really a pain!
2. Answering machine base don't display the number of messages you have (it has no lcd screen!). No talking id or any other fancy stuff either.
3. When you play messages from answering machine the sound is a little boxy, robot like...not clear. This does not happen if you hear messages from the phones themselves.

In conclusion I would say this is an all right phone, I expected better... but it is also not very expensive and it has the latest technology. I guess now I know why some 5.8 panasonic phones (previous technology) were more expensive than this one... you get what you pay.

This is a great telephone.We were looking for a replacement for our older 2.4GHz phone which had two handsets...some of the buttons didn't work very well and it suffered from interference in the kitchen when using the microwave.Was thinking 5.8GHz and hadn't heard of Dect 6.0; check out [...]

This phone is getting close to a cell phone in terms of features...full display (monochrome), multi-segment battery meter, phone book, multiple selectable ring tones, call timer, each handset has a speakerphone,etc.The menus and voice prompt for the answering machine can do english or spanish.One interesting aspect is that many programmable items are done on a per-handset basis, so for example one handset could have its own unique ring tone.Address book entries can be entered into any handset and then kept local to that handset or transferred over to a specific handset or to all handsets.When we got the phone I put in about 15 numbers, and then in a single 5 second operation transferred all those entries to all of the other handsets.

One thing I've always hated about cordless phones is that replacement batteries are typically expensive and use outdated (NiCd) technology.This phone however uses two AAA NiMH rechargeable batteries in each handset.So no more searching for a replacement battery specifically made for this phone.

Only two quibbles.The answering machine does not display how many messages there are, there's just a single light that flashes (on the base unit, as well as on each handset if desired (programmable)) if there are any new messages.If you listen to and keep one message and delete the others, the new message light goes out and there's no way to tell by looking at the unit that any messages are stored.This is an issue in the following situation:When I listen to messages and save one because it's for my wife, then when she comes home she looks and doesn't see any indicator that there's a message waiting.So each of us needs to get into the habit of pressing the message button to check regardless of whether or not the light is flashing.The answering machine CAN be disabled however (and each handset can be set to display a message waiting indicator when using voicemail from the phone company).Total message time capacity is 16 minutes including the outgoing message.

Other minor beef, and this is very minor, is that only two handsets can be used concurrently for a call.So you can't have the whole family on their own handset talking to grandpa.But honestly we've never used more than 2 phones at a time so this isn't really an issue, but it would be nice.

This phone can be purchased with four handsets (base unit plus 3 additional), or with 2, 3, or 5 handsets.Functionally they are identical.Each is expandable up to a total of 6 handsets.
